It took many years of self-doubt, struggle and rejection to get to where he is today. Overcoming such challenges is one of the reasons why he’s so dedicated to giving back and helping others. Read his personal story below.

Before becoming a personal trainer and operating multiple gyms, he struggled with self-confidence and knowing his purpose in life. As a kid, Ajani played many sports but was always the shortest or smallest person on the team. I always felt I had to prove myself more than anyone on the teams. Once, as a kid, while playing running back, I suffered a big hit and was taken out of the game. Although I was the best running back on the team (and the smallest), my coach refused to pay me the remaining of the season. Not immediately placing me back in games, was a major setback because it taught me not to face fears when challenged. This self-doubt followed me into high school. After graduating from high school, I wandered from technical schools and community colleges but never fully committed myself. I was working as a bank teller for several years, when I told myself, “If I don’t promote by December, I’m going to quit and go to college full-time and totally commit myself.” I did not get promoted while at the bank, so I quit with no real-income and faced my fears.

Fitness Monroe Township New Jersey By Ajani Malik-It was one of the best decisions, I made in my life. It was the fears and self-doubt that was holding me back. I committed to my studies at Howard University and graduated in less than 4 years.
I injured my back while playing basketball and had to be treated by a chiropractor. I was so embarrassed, that I made another promise to myself. That promise was to NEVER get out of shape again. I started exercising daily and I’ve NEVER looked back or stopped. I began to do strength training Every day. I would read everything I could get my hands on related to exercising. I would watch numerous workout TV shows and check-out DVD and tapes from the library. I became a Certified Personal Trainer. It was during this time I committed to martial arts. I studied Hapkido, TKD, Jeet Kune Do, Kickboxing, and grappling techniques. My mentor and teacher were Grandmaster Yung Sung Lee in Maryland. He was the best and most influential martial arts teacher I’ve had. I also trained with former Kickboxing champion Orlando Rivera. And, I studied Muay Thai and Kickboxing with Brayner Martinez in NY. I also received my Black Belt in TKD.

From 2004 to 2007, I suffered from a major bout of depression. It was, without a doubt, to the difficult challenge I had faced. I was tired ALL the time. I’ve always been an early-riser, but during my battle with depression, I would sleep until 10 am or 11 am. I would wake up, put my clothes on, and then get back into bed. I was so mentally drained that literally could not balance my chequebook. During this time, I would ask God ALL the time, “how much more of this do I have to take?” I’ve always been a voracious reader, so I spent most of this time reading and researching on the depression. I recall a close friend telling me, “Ajani, you need to get back to the gym and exercise and get back into your routine.” It actually felt like I was dying those 3 years of my life. I took my friend’s advice and got back to the gym. BUT, I had gotten considerably weaker so I literally had to restart my exercise lifestyle from scratch. It was a helluva challenge but I was determined not to give up and quit.
In 2007, I opened my first Snap Fitness gym. In 2010, I opened the 2nd gym. And, in 2011, I opened the third gym. Fitness and exercising is MY LIFE. I wake up every day blessed with the opportunity to do what I love and to help as many people as I can. My goal is to change the world and reduce the overweight and obesity rate. I’m FULLY committed to doing my part and helping my clients and community.
